Creating a CNAME record for any one of the domains or subdomains you have within a hosting account will allow you to redirect it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain address will lose all its records - A, MX and so forth, and will take the records of the domain it is being pointed to. In this light, you simply can't set up a CNAME record to forward your domain name to a third-party provider and retain a working email service with the first provider. Additionally, it is important to note that a CNAME record is always a string of words and never a number as it's commonly mistaken for the A record of the domain name being forwarded. One of the primary uses of a CNAME record is to point a domain you own through one provider to the servers of another provider in case you have set up a website with the latter. That way, the website will appear under your own domain address, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party provider.
CNAME Records in Shared Web Hosting
If you have a shared web hosting plan from our company and you want to create a CNAME record, it will take you a few clicks to make it happen. You can access the DNS records for all domain addresses and subdomains hosted in your account through the Hepsia Control Panel that comes with each plan and adding a new record is as easy as clicking on a button, selecting the type, which will be CNAME in this case, typing the actual record value and saving the modification. If you've never added such a record before, you will find a Help section with a detailed video tutorial which you can watch, or you can just contact us and we will help you with this task. If you have set up a website through another provider, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you would like to designate a subdomain to be used with the services of a different provider, for example Google Apps, all it takes is setting up a CNAME record with a few clicks inside your CP.
